Kushti Guru: A Soldier Teaches Ancient Martial Skills

Kushti Guru: A Soldier Teaches Ancient Martial Skills

From the humble soil of Mamurdi, a village near Pune, rose a warrior whose heart beat to the ancient rhythm of kushti. Young Sopan Shingade's eyes would light up watching wrestlers grapple in the sacred earth of the akhada, their movements telling stories of strength, honour, and tradition. While his father worked the land and his mother tended their home, Sopan's dreams took shape in the dust of wrestling grounds, inspired by his elder brother's battles on the mat.The village boy who once watched from the sidelines transformed into a soldier-wrestler, carrying his passion into the ranks of the Indian Army. Here, Sopan's dedication to kushti didn't just survive – it thrived. With every medal he won, every championship he conquered, he kept alive a centuries-old tradition that ran deeper than sport. His excellence earned him not just the coveted 'Best Soldier Wrestler' title, but also promoted him to the rank of Subedar, marking him as a leader both on and off the mat.

Sopan's victories weren't just his own – they came also through nurturing fellow soldiers, moulding raw talent into championship material. For years, he passed on the knowledge of kushti, watching his students rise to national and international glory. Yet, as retirement approached in November 2022, a question burned in this warrior's heart: how could he continue serving the sport that had given him everything?

The answer came in an unexpected form at BEG & Center, where I Create India's entrepreneurship programs illuminated a new path. The ancient art of wrestling met modern business acumen, and from this fusion, Guru Drona Acharya Kushti Sankul was born in Kharadi, Pune. This became a temple of transformation, where young men could live, breathe, and become warriors of the mat.

In partnership with Pune Municipal Corporation, his investment of Rs. 20 lakhs is an investment in the dreams of countless young warriors who, like him, hear the ancient call of kushti in their hearts. It is a sanctuary where dreams can take physical form, where the values of kushti – discipline, respect, and unwavering dedication – shape men of character. Along with training local students, his residential program now offers shelter and sustenance.

As a judge of the prestigious Hind Kesari and Maharashtra Kesari kushti competitions, he helps preserve the sport's rich heritage. But his vision reaches beyond titles and trophies – he sees Olympic gold in India's future, glinting in the determined eyes of his students.

Through the dust of the akhada, through the rigors of military service, through the challenges of entrepreneurship, Sopan has remained true to his passion. His story isn't just about wrestling or business success – it's a testament to the power of following one's calling, and the profound impact of giving back to the art that shaped your life.
